Christmas Jumper Day
It’s not that we don’t have these in the US (only we call them sweaters), but there is something endearing about the way the supposedly stodgy British embrace the silliness of over-the-top Christmas jumpers.
And this particular holiday was created with the aim of raising funds in support of Save the Children, a nonprofit that helps children in need across the globe. The nonprofit was founded in 1919 by a British woman named Eglantyne Jebb who was horrified that children were starving in Eastern European countries because humanitarian aid was being blocked; children were collateral damage from the fighting during World War I.
Sound familiar?
More than a hundred years later the organization is still needed and still doing its work, now in the majority of countries all around the world. It’s a serious organization doing serious work and tackling serious problems. But the Christmas jumpers obviously are a reminder of the naturally joyful, and often silly, spirits of children, one of the world’s most valuable and, sadly, too often overlooked resources.
So, get out your crazy Christmas jumper/sweater/earrings/pajamas and join the fun!
